In this workshop you'll learn how to brew this delicious, health-promoting probiotic drink from scratch - it's so easy and cost-effective. You'll take home your very own SCOBY and starter brew, plus a comprehensive list of instructions and FAQs to help you on your way. Feedback From Past Workshops

"Katie spoke really well; knew what she was talking about and seemed extremely knowledgeable. Was very engaging!"

"Katie was so genuine and the session flowed so well. Left feeling very inspired by her approach to health, thanks Katie!"

Note: My Kombucha is home-brewed naturally with rainwater, sugar, loose leaf tea and a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY). It is not pasteurised so as to promote maximum populations of healthy microbes and naturally contains a very small percentage of alcohol. I recommend gradual introduction into your diet to give your body time to adjust - if you experience ongoing gut problems, consult your GP or Dietician for professional advice.

Towards Zero Waste Living: Two-Part Workshop

IMG_6572.JPG

Due to popular demand, Meg and Katie are running a second round of workshops dedicated to educating, inspiring and supporting those already on the path towards a zero waste lifestyle. You'll learn how to avoid common disposable items beyond the Big Five Plastics (coffee cups, shopping bags, food packaging, cutlery/straws, water bottles), by learning to make your own packaging-free bathroom, laundry and personal products. We will cover different topics over two nights that go beyond this and delve into other areas of life, like fashion, babies and travel. You will need to purchase tickets for each night separately, as some people will only be able to attend one session, though we recommend coming to both. Those who come to both events will receive a $10 voucher to use at the lovely Valerie's Pantry!

Part 1: Mon 25/6/18 7pm-8.30pm
Part 2: Wed 27/06/18 7pm-8.30pm

You'll have plenty of time to ask questions, share ideas and chat with other waste warriors who share a passion for sustainable living. Vegan snacks, tea and some surprise goodies will be provided, plus you'll receive take-home recipes to help you on your way!

Please come with an open mind and plenty of questions - remember, just by thinking about reducing waste you're already taking a huge step in the right direction for our Earth! Well done, we look forward to meeting you! Make sure you join the Towards Zero Waste Geelong Facebook group for ongoing support and info.

Workshop: Composting for the Earth

 Freshly harvested cold compost

Freshly harvested cold compost

Never made compost before? Perhaps you've tried and failed? Or perhaps you've heard many composting myths and want some answers. In this two-hour session you'll leave knowing how to start and maintain a compost system that's right for your both lifestyle and living space. The workshop is comprised of two parts - a good coverage of theoretical soil science and compost know-how, followed by a practical hands-on demo of a standard cold compost heap and analysis of a ready-made batch. Be prepared to get messy!

Composting is an amazing way of turning organic waste into a beautiful soil additive, reducing your contribution to landfill and atmospheric methane gas, while improving your soil's carbon storage and structure. Of course, it also helps your plants grow well! There's a lot of misinformation out there about composting methods and about do's and don't's, which can be confusing and demotivating. Come along to The Blue House to find out how to set up a compost system that suits you, meet likeminded people, and get your hands dirty!

Given the likelihood of chilly weather, hot tea and vegan scones will certainly be provided. The theory component of this workshop will be held indoors and the practical component outdoors - please wear appropriate clothing!

Included topics:
- the benefits of composting
- introduction to soil science and remediation with compost
- basic plant structure and needs
- basic tools needed for composting
- overview of four different composting systems
- what you can/can't put in your home compost
- hands-on opportunity to build a cold compost system (most common system)
- handle a batch of finished compost
- how to use your beautiful compost in the garden

What to bring:
- warm weather-appropriate clothing
- closed-toe shoes, preferably boots
- raincoat if indicated
- notebook if desired

PURCHASE TICKETS HERE

Important note: Workshop subject to cancellation pending weather conditions. Heavy rain/storms will prompt the organiser to contact all attendants 24 hours prior to workshop in the event of extreme weather and organise a ticket refund and/or reschedule. Please check emails prior to event in case of cancellation.

Towards Zero Waste - Absolute Beginners

Want to reduce your waste? No idea where to start? Or maybe you've heard of the Zero Waste movement and just want to learn more. This 90 minute crash course has been designed to provide you with a great introduction to cutting waste at the individual/household level and to show how easy it can be! Reducing consumption and waste by changing the way you shop frequently saves you money too. From bulk stores, to reusable travel packs, composting, DIY toothpaste, and even cooking with 'odd' veggie parts, there are SO many ways you can begin to consciously throw out less and directly reduce your environmental impact. We'll cover the most important topics to get you started, then jump on our Towards Zero Waste Geelong Facebook group for ongoing support, information and events to continue the journey!

Meg and Katie, leaders of Towards Zero Waste Geelong, were passionately active in lowering their own environmental footprint for about two years before running an overwhelmingly successful workshop series in January 2018 at Valerie's Pantry, Belmont. These workshops booked out in three days and have been followed by regular requests for more sessions! We aim to keep information direct, relevant, and applicable to anyone regardless of age/gender/background/lifestyle. The more people that know how important waste reduction and climate change mitigation is, the better chance the next generation has at a healthy future.
